What Was Your Special/First Camera?

Kodak Instamatic 100

Tell Us the Story of Your Camera

I kept pestering my parents for a camera, and finally, in the Christmas of 1963, they got me one. Little did I know, at the time, that it was the first instamatic camera in the US, using Kodak's new 126 film cartridge. It had a pop-up single flash bulb holder. Shot lots of pictures with that camera. Wish I still had it.

First SLR was a Pentax SP 500 with a 35mm f/2 lens. Bought it for $180, including the lens, during my first year of photography class in high school. Must have been around 1971. This camera I still have.

Advice

  • Don't go crazy trying to decide on a camera or model. Start out with a basic camera and work your way into a more expensive DSLR, if you reach the point that you really need it. I have seen many incredible photos taken with simple cameras and many bad photos from the best cameras and lenses.
  • If you get a DSLR, buy the best quality lenses you can afford. No other factor, besides user knowledge, is as important. Buy one lens at a time so you really use it and get good with it. You may find you don't need to waste money on that next lens.
