My wife asked me to throw out the roses my daughter got. Before I did, I had a thought about them losing their petals and that gave me an idea. I set up a make shift still life area with some boxes and some black material. With a pen light focused to the side of the flowers, I dropped a petal and used a rear sync flash to give me the motion blur I needed for a half second exposure. It took a lot of tries to get the petal to drop where I needed it and keep my hand out of the picture. In the beginning it looked like it was dropped from the top of the frame above the flowers. The flowers were also over exposed until I moved the pen light off to the side. The more pictures I took, the more inventive I had to be to get it to look right.
Advice
- Paper towel holders work great to focus light into a small area
- Don't give up until you get what you want
- Assistants are worth every penny if you pay them at all
