Is a model release on file for all recognizable people?

N/A, this is my dog

What day was the photo taken?

January 17, 2010

Photo Description

This was taken using my Canon A70 Power Shot mainly because my good DSLR is in the repair shop. Still I think for a mini camera the A70 does a pretty good job. I shot from a mini tripod (actually was sold as a Backpacker's tripod) with a sensitivity setting of ISO50, at 3.2MP, and f8.0 shutter speed at 1/60 for a good flash sync. The camera special effects were set to B&W and I used the timer release to shoot hands off to make sure I didn't accidentally shake it.

Next I dumped it into Paint Shop Pro for a bit of enhancing, which I increased the contrast a bit and darkened the shadows a bit.

Then I resized it and discovered I had a problem shrinking it for some reason until I chose a different resizing method (dynamic weighting instead of pixel resizing) then it seemed to come out a lot cleaner.

Advice

  • The best advice on this type of picture I can give is whenever you have to resize a pic, especially if it’s changed by a large amount, most photo handling programs offer several different methods of changing the image size, and it’s worth trying them all to see which produces the best results for each picture.

Liz Masoner, Photography Guide, says:

I like the texture quality on the dog's fur in this image and the eye is very well lit. The background is a bit distracting however with the grey material mimicking the line of the dog's face so that it draws more attention to the far side of the dog's face instead of the side closest the camera. Also, the nose is partially hidden behind the overexposed white material. Overall it is a very nice portrait with just a couple of points to watch for next time.
