Photo Description

When examining my photos of today, my breath was taken away by this composition. It truly felt like a "WOW" image which I have been seeking to accomplish in my photos. All the dogs were in different attitudes today, some watching, some running hither and thither. I am very grateful to be able to share this here. I hope you enjoy it as I have. Any comments appreciated for changes or improvements are welcome, as I am very new to the art of photography.

EXIF: Sony DSLR-A200 camera, Lens 75-300mm F4.5-5.6, Aperture 5.6, Focal length 200.00 mm, shutter speed 1/400 sec. ISO 400.

Advice

  • “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.”-George Graham Vest.
  • Take lots of pictures.
  • Try to remember to compose a shot in the field like rule of thirds, golden mean, golden spiral, golden triangles, then cropping won't waste pixels.
  • Crop, crop, crop.

Liz Masoner, Photography Guide, says:

Requested critique: I do like the tones of this image. Although slightly flat it has a nice creamy texture to the image that fits well with the shaggy dog against a white background (suggesting snow). Profile face portraits of animals generally do not work well purely as a centered composition because of the body leading out of frame to one side. Using the rule of thirds so that the animal's visible eye is on a rule of thirds intersection line and then allowing empty space in the frame in the direction the animal is looking generally creates a much stronger image.
