When and where was the photo taken?

This was taken January 2008 on the outskirts of Uniontown, WA--the heart of the Palouse.

Photo Description

The photo is of the wheel fence around the Dahmen barn on a cold foggy January morning. This fence is made from antique wheels and gears welded together by the farmer. The lack of sun and of shadows helps convey the feeling of cold that is part and parcel of January.

Advice

  • For winter photography it's essential to dress warmly. I wear thin gloves over mits that flip open to expose my fingers when I'm ready to shoot. I also wear instant toe warmers in my boots to help make standing around in the snow more tolerable. When it's time to shoot it's helpful to increase your exposure compensation about 1 stop to help snow remain white rather than the gray that the camera wants to make it.
