Photo Description

Cache La Poudre is on Trail Ridge Road, the road that goes through Rocky Mountain National Park. It's at the Continental Divide and a very popular and photogenic place. We've stopped there many times when it was crawling with people. This time, not only was it in the fall, but also it was overcast. But I could see the clouds would break up eventually so we just waited. It actually was better than on a sunny day.

Advice

  • Know where the sun will be and plan to take your time. Also, I tried this shot with a neutral density filter but didn't like it after I got it downloaded. Luckily I like to fool around, so I'd also tried it without, which is this shot. I used aperture priority to get the depth of field I wanted, and manual focus because the camera kept wanting to focus on the ripples.

Liz Masoner, Photography Guide, says:

Requested Critique: This is a wonderful landscape scene but it doesn't really fit into natural framing. There is no coherent surrounding frame for the scene. There are plenty of leading lines with the hills and their reflection pointing us further into the scene.
