The net which bound much of California

Is a model release on file for all recognizable people?

N/A

What day was the photo taken?

December 9, 2009- while stalking the elusive Night Heron

Photo Description

This bronze sculpture is a monument to the hard working fishermen of Isala de la Femme, and the other islands and communities that make up Sicily, all part of the foundation of the fishing industry that has defined Monterey for over a century.

John Steinbeck won the Nobel prize in Literature for his work "Cannery Row", which is but a mile from where this photo was shot. Now the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a bastion of Oceanic Conservation dominates Cannery Row, and restaurants line Old Fisherman's Wharf. At least I can proudly say that I work for the only Restaurant on the Wharf that is, and has been, a "Seafood Watch Partner" with the Aquarium since the program began- we serve only sustainable seafood, harvested in a manner that does not harm the environment. The communities of Pittsburgh, California, and Monterey are separated by over 130 miles- yet the same family names are found in both towns. As the fishermen came to America, they settled up north in Pittsburgh, but found the Harbor and fisheries of Monterey welcoming to them, and in the days of "Monterey Boat Works" and Cannery Row, both regions thrived and fished... for sardines it was to the point of the fisheries collapse- but the bounty of the bay has provided a livelihood for a huge number of families, over at least five generations.

Advice

  • I don't know that I can offer any, other than when taking a photo of a Stature, be prepared to wash it first. Otherwise, 'unsavory elements' will leave their mark. Oh, and the masts of many boats augment almost any photo!
