Golden Sunlit Tree on a Dark Rainy Day - Centered

Is a model release on file for all recognizable people?

Not Applicable

When was the photo taken?

Late afternoon, October 20, 2009 in Salt Lake City Utah. The sun broke through the clouds just before sunset on that dreary rainy day. The result was like a spotlight trained on the golden fall tree, leaving the distant mountains cloudy and dark.

Photo Description

The first photo gives the strongest representation of the subject. The position of the tree along the right rule of thirds line helps emphasize its contrast to the dark, hazy, smokey cloud covered mountains in the background. The second photo of the same scene highlights the color of the tree but does not evoke the same dramatic perspective as the first photo.

Tips and Tricks

  • Positioning on the thirds intersections helps emphasize the point of interest because the eye is naturally drawn there
  • I learned how to create a rule of thirds cropping guide in Photoshop and rediscovered the one in my camera viewfinder.
