Photo Description

Entry#1: Oak Tree Stump. This very old Oak Tree died and began to lean, so had to be cut down. We decided to keep the stump to set plants and rocks on for a natural use for it as we loved the tree. Trees provide shelter and beauty and this tree stump, although decaying slowly is still doing that. It has since been used for animals and insects and the age and decay over time is showing. I have always been fascinated to see the birds animals, and insects use this tree stump and have taken pictures of the designs in the bark and parts over time. I shot this and converted to more sepia tones for a monochromatic look depicting the dead wood. The acorn cap was a plus and showed up in the photo.

Advice

  • Just try to think outside of the box in contests. I find when I do I learn something new about the camera as well as nature or whatever I am assigned to shoot.

Liz Masoner, Photography Guide, says:

Requested Critique: I really like this image overall. The main points that keep it from being an outstanding wow factor are the angle and the lack of contrast. The shooting angle puts us looking directly at the edge of the stump so it is hard to tell what is supposed to be flat and what is supposed to be vertical. Shooting at either a higher or lower angle could correct this issue. The sepia tone adds a nice sense of age to the image but the slightly soft focus makes the need for more contrast more apparent. More contrast (or sharper focus (larger depth of field) would help define the different layers of the stump better.
