Photo essays take us into the realm of storytelling. This assignment we will be explored photo essays. A photo essay, or picture story, is a photographer’s way of showing a more complete story than is possible with one image. It is a collection of images that work together to tell a story.
1. Winning photo essay by Karla Pitts
This essay nicely shows an event from beginning to end while adding emotional context.
2. Finalist Photo Essay by Kalue
This essay does a nice job of showing a time line event that occurs over several areas.
3. Finalist Photo Essay by AmrJoe
This essay shows us a time line type event where trains are brought in for service and repair. Because this is not a familiar event to many the captions are a good addition to the essay.
4. Finalist Photo Essay by Melissa Marshall
This is another tour type photo essay that shows us around Tombstone. The images work nicely in vignetted black and white however, the image of a modern child seems a bit out of place within the rest of the essay.
5. Finalist Photo Essay by RobGraphics
This essay combines tour and time line by taking us through the different eras that campus buildings were created. The captions are a big plus in this type of essay.
6. Finalist Photo Essay by Stephanie Calhoun
This photo essay shows a day on a lake and takes the tour approach to telling the story.
7. Finalist Photo Essay by Mobikerchick
This essay shows the growth of a tomato and its final destination (in this case, a sandwich). There are couple of slightly redundant slides but overall this is a nice essay showing a timeline event.
8. Finalist Photo Essay by Bumblebeesteve
This photo essay shows a business trip. While it is a common event, the essay documents it well.
9. Finalist Photo Essay by Agomez
This photo essay shows the social problem of litter in a city park. The contrast between the pristine natural setting and the man-made garbage helps create a strong message.
