This image is a nice example of environmental portraiture. That means the environment helps tell the story of the subject. The shoes in this image are from WWII. By placing them in the sand near the right edge of the frame, their motion is effectively stopped and we look towards where the shoes "have been". The shoe print behind the shoes helps to add to the idea of the real story being what happened before as does the worn look of the shoes and their positioning as though they were walking moments earlier.
