This image makes use of several visual factors to create a strong image. The use of black and white removes any distracting splash of color. Next, the slight vignetting gives an old feel to the scene. The tree itself creates two leading lines, the main gap in the trunk and the splintered limb at the bottom - both of which draw attention to the skull.
