Rules are everywhere, not just for kids but for photographers as well. Don't center the subject. You have to look at the camera. You have to smile. Make sure all clothing matches. Don't use "program mode." The list goes on. Much like everyone has advice to offer about parenting, often followed by predictions of doom and gloom if you don't follow that advice, it seems like everyone has something to say about what you can or can't do in a photo. Well, break the "rules" for a change. Photography is a creative art form and kids are creative creatures by nature. Photographing kids works best when it is an exercise in creativity. No rules, just snap.
