Photo Op - Cherry Blossom Viewing Festivals

Beginning around March and stretching most of the year (depending on your climate zone), people across the globe celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossoms. This tradition originated in Japan where it is called Hanami. You may also see this referred to as Sakura viewing in some areas. Sakura is the Japanese word for cherry blossom and is the national flower of Japan.

These beautiful flowers tend to rain petals whenever a slight breeze blows, creating a wonderful effect for those walking beneath the trees. Blossoms range from pink to white and offer numerous opportunities for photographers. Keep in mind that once Sakura bloom they only bloom for a short time (sometimes only a week). When the cherry blossoms are ready in your area, do not procrastinate about going to photograph them or they may be gone. The vast majority of cherry blossom viewings tend to be from mid-March to early May so be sure to check your local area quickly for a schedule.

National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. (photos of the event) is the largest Hanami, or cherry blossom viewing in the United States. Remember to check with your local botanical gardens or Japanese cultural organization to see if Hanami is happening close to you.

If you can't get to an organized Hanami, you can always plant a cherry tree of your own and then you'll never miss the year's blossoms.
