Guide Review - Review of Eye-Fi Mobile x2 Wireless Memory Card
Eye-Fi wireless memory cards are wi-fi enabled SD memory cards. They are designed to let you upload JPEG images directly from your camera to your computer, smartphone, or tablet via wi-fi instead of having to remove the card and use a card reader or connect the camera directly to the computer. This is an excellent solution for getting previews onto a larger screen during photo shoots and for extending the memory capability of your camera without buying huge memory cards.
Initial set up of Eye-Fi does require an Eye-Fi card reader and computer. Set up on computer is required before you can enable the direct connection to a smartphone or tablet. The initial computer set up is relatively straight forward but you are required to set up an online account with Eye-Fi even if you do not intend to use the backup or other online features.
Setting up the direct connection with a tablet is more frustrating. A lot of back and forth to settings menus to allow all the different bits that Eye-Fi insists on to work. For example, Eye-Fi requires location services be turned on and for the life of me I can't figure out why it can't work without location services.
Once set up is handled, Eye-Fi works smoothly. Wireless range is a bit limited so don't expect to shoot in one room and upload two or three rooms away. Transfer speed is good but will not keep up with rapid fire shooting for multiple frames per second.
