Guide Review - Canon EF 300mm f2.8 IS USM Lens
As one would expect from a lens costing as much as some motorcycles, the Canon EF 300mm f2.8 IS USM Lens produces amazingly clear images with very fast and precise focusing. As will all lenses, it sometimes has trouble finding small objects among other small objects (birds partially hidden by twigs) but autofocus is spot-on most of the time. When paired with a Canon EOS body that has good noise control in the upper ISO range (so that fast shutter speeds can be achieved) this lens is capable of being hand-held for short periods of time thanks to image stabilization in spite of its hefty weight.
This lens is a member of Canon's L-series lenses which is their top of the line professional glass. As such, the image quality produced by this lens is truly amazing. The controls are relatively simple but you will need to read the instructions for a few things such as to find out the function of image stabilization 1 vs 2. The supplied lens hood is long enough that lens flare isn't a problem but the hood is not very sturdy (especially considering the cost of the lens). Controls on the lens are recessed so as to not be accidentally bumped and the tripod mount is sturdy.
Overall this lens produces the high quality images you would expect from Canon's L-series lenses and the accessories (lens hood) is constructed like an afterthought. No surprises really when you consider a lens of this type.
