Definition: Contrast is the difference between light and dark in a photograph. High contrast refers to images with both very dark and very light areas. Low contrast would describe photos without large changes in light values. This does not necessarily mean that black and white must be present in a photo for high contrast. Differences in light value can be strong in other instances as well. For example, a photo of four people wearing brightly colored shirts could contrast well and a photo of a foggy morning would have low contrast.
