Backlit

By Liz Masoner, About.com

Definition: Backlit is a photography term referring to images with more light behind the subject than on the subject itself. This results in the subject appearing too dark in the image. A very common situation for this to occur are when photographers are looking up at a subject and the bright sky is behind the subject. Fill flash is often used to correct this problem.
