Like urban images, images of broken or drastically weathered subjects work very well in B&W. Part of this is because weathered and aged wood tends to naturally lose its color and become a shade of grey so we mentally link age and greyness. This image takes advantage of that link with the dilapidated boat house. The rule of thirds is well used as are leading lines to pull us through the image. The sky is nicely exposed as well instead of being blown out or completely featureless as often happens in B&W photography.
You can read the story behind the image on the original submission page.
