This image also uses a technique generally associated with age. Vignette combined with black and white helps to reinforce the feeling of age in this image with the cut field and the lone tree. Trees alone in a field like this originally came from the method for clearing the fields. One tree would be used as a fulcrum point for the chains to wrap around as the horse and mule teams pulled up the stumps from other felled trees. This left one tree in the field alone. This image speaks very well to that era.
