This image uses the uniqueness of the tree itself to create interest. The shape of the tree and the large cavity is not pretty but it is very appealing visually. Also, the tree is placed on a vertical rule of thirds line with the cavity placed at the intersection point of the top horizontal line. The colors work well in this image also with the green grass and blue sky suggesting life contrasting nicely to the apparent death of the tree.
