This image makes use of the top left intersection point combined with leading lines and color contrast to make a single point a very strong visual draw. In this case the center of the pencil circle is actually the focal point rather than the pencils. By using brightly colored pencils that form leading lines pointing to this spot the photographer has already created some visual interest but by placing the empty circle on the rule of thirds intersection point the eye is captured at that point rather than following the pencils back out of the image.
