Moon Photography

Monday December 8, 2008
With the clear winter skies, now is a great time to turn our attention skyward for some great photos. Moon photography can yield some great images, especially in winter when the skies are crystal clear. And you can even take moon photos without going outside in the middle of the night! Take a moment to read up on our moon photography tips and then get out there and "shoot the moon".

Dont be afraid to use your flash! Set your camera up on a tripod, and use the auto timer to avoid any shaking while pressing any buttons.
I find firing the flash IS helpful on nights where the moon is exceptionally bright. Also using a CP, ND, filter helps to bring out the contrasts in the moon as well!

The only thing the flash is doing is telling the camera it can use a faster shutter speed than without flash. You are completely right that this is a great work around for those with point and shoot cameras. However, this method is can be very sketchy for creating the exposure you need as every camera differs in what it considers a “proper flash exposure”. It is best to make these determinations yourself to ensure the best exposure if your camera has that capability. Also, the firing flash can sometimes cause “light pollution” in the shot.

Did anyone manage to get a stunning photo of the recent Moon alignment with Saturn & Mars?
