Somali Kidnappers Demand $2.5 Million for Release of Photojournalists
Monday September 8, 2008
According to the AFP - journalists and photographers Nigel Brennan, Amanda Lindhout, and Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi will be released for $2.5 Million dollars ($1.8 Million Euros). This news has been met with hopeful optimism by those involved as it is a sign that the kidnappers are purely looking for profit and not wanting to make a political statement. Political kidnappings are often the most dangerous as kidnappers are willing to harm their captives to make a point. In profit kidnapping, keeping the captives alive and healthy is more important to ensure ransoms are paid.
