Fluorescent Studio Lighting Review

By August 8, 2008

Follow me on:

Fluorescent studio lights are the newest way to have continuous lighting without the incredible heat of the old tungsten sets. The fluorescent bulbs also don't explode if you touch them with your bare hands. Several lighting manufacturers are putting out fluorescent kits with varied results. To start About Photography's reviews of fluorescent lighting I began with pretty much the cheapest set on the market.

I wouldn’t go back now that I’ve been using daylight fluorescents for a year. My studio temperature and my power bill are at far better levels!

Hey Lesley,

We’d love to know what set of fluorescents you use. We are hoping to review more sets that are more user friendly.

While we very much appreciate your review of our product, I feel the need to write in defense of some of the issues you address. First, while I agree, the softbox is somewhat difficult to assemble, it is by no means impossible and no more difficult than most other boxes. Complete assembly instructions are provided and we are always happy to answer questions on any product. We feel the Vu-Pro V-Cool Kit is an excellent value and compares very well with the Interfit kit that we also sell at nearly twice the price. It carries a full one year warranty and we stand behind it 100%. If there are ever any concerns with any product we sell, we stand ready to address them to the customers satisfaction. We are a family owned business and have been serving photographers since 1978. That is a rare thing in todays marketplace.

I appreciate your taking the time to express your position in a professional manner. That certainly is a rare thing in today’s marketplace and it is appreciated. As I said in my review, it is still a possible choice for those wanting a beginning kit. However, while I am personally able to overlook many of this particular kit’s flaws in favor of the extremely low price, I could not in clear conscience overlook them in a review for my audience. And with all due respect, it wasn’t the instructions that made the softbox impossible for me to install. The instructions were very well done. It was the sheer physical force required to bend the assembly rods while they are constrained by the fabric of the softbox.
