Fireworks Photography

Monday June 23, 2008
Independence Day is racing towards us. Now is the time to start planning for your fireworks photographs. While most people are busy eating lots of BBQ ribs or trying to set up the biggest fireworks display on the block, photographers are busy preparing to take lots of fireworks photographs.

Pick out a good vantage point ahead of time when you can easily see any possible obstructions in the light. Be sure to have a small flashlight with you for easy viewing of your setup on the night of the fireworks as well. If this will be your first year trying fireworks photography I strongly suggest getting a few small backyard fireworks and practicing on them before trying to photograph a big show. You will learn a lot about your camera and feel much more confident if you take the time to practice. Fireworks require a slightly different process than standard daylight subjects to capture but with a little practice and these helpful tips you will do fine.

Also, don't forget that other nighttime scenes are worth photographing as well.
