Assignment Changes and Assignment 19 - Rule of Thirds
Wednesday January 16, 2008
This assignment marks the beginning of a new assignment schedule and new rules.New Schedule
Assignments will now be twice a month. The first assignment will run from the 1st through the 15th of the month and the second assignment will run from the 16th through the last day of the month. One assignment each month will be a fun theme-based contest such as last week's bird assignment. The other assignment will be a lesson assignment based on a particular aspect of photography, such as this assignment. The deadline for each contest will be at 10PM Eastern time on the last day of the assignment.
Assignment winners will now be announced 3 days after the finish of the contest. For example, winners for contests finishing on the 15th will be announced on the 18th. Winners for contests finishing on the last day of the month will be announced on the 3rd day of the following month.
Additional Critiques
In addition to the winner and up to 8 finalists posted in the winner's gallery, I will also be selecting several images each contest for additional critiques to be posted in the entry thread.
Photography Assignment 19 - Rule of Thirds
This assignment is to use the rule of thirds in an image. The rule of thirds is a compositional rule that makes use of the natural preferences of the human eye. It is essentially an imaginary tic-tac-toe board placed on top of an image. Where the lines intersect are the strongest points of interest and the lines themselves are secondary points of interest.

For this assignment, subject choice is not as important as subject placement. Beyond basic technical aspects, the majority of judging for this assignment will be based on how well the rule of thirds is used in the image. Best of luck to everyone and happy shooting!

Comments
Thanks! This had actually helped me in a photoclass Im taking. I have become a better photographer and learnt a whole lot from this!
The rule of thirds is a fundamental rule in photography and can help anyone capture a better photograph. however the number one rule in photography and i think this applies to all photographers that’s wedding photographers, portrait still life street photographers whatever, is to break all the rules and push the potographic boundaries.
There are times to break the photographic rules and times to follow them. However, a solid understanding of the rules lets you know when you should follow or break the rules.
