Cold Weather Photography

Monday December 17, 2007
While most people are bundled up inside on cold days, photographers are notorious for doing stupid things like laying down in half-frozen water to photograph a leaf partially encased in ice. There is one main rule for cold weather photography...don't do stupid stuff! Anything you would consider crazy when not holding a camera is still crazy when you are holding a camera! Still, icy conditions and crystal clear blue winter skies are like catnip to photographers and I know you'll be out there this winter (yes, I will too). When you do go out on winter photography expeditions keep some basic rules in mind.

Use Common Sense - your camera is not a magic shield to protect you
Plan Ahead - a little planning will save you from frostbite later
Avoid Common Cold Weather Problems - you can't avoid what you don't understand
