Counterfeit Batteries

While most of us have probably bought a camera battery from a secondary manufacturer, counterfeit batteries are a completely different issue. Counterfeit batteries are batteries designed to fool you into thinking that they are from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), such as Canon, Pentax, or Nikon. While counterfeits can be nearly identical to OEM batteries in appearance, their internal workings are not. Many times these batteries are not made to OEM specifications and can have dangerous failures. Counterfeit batteries have been known to burn or explode. Check with your camera manufacturer if you have a question about the authenticity of a battery you own.
